Luke Martin - Digital/Mixed Media
About Luke
I’m Luke, an illustrator working in mixed media and digital techniques. Art has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember and is a fundamental part of who I am. I was taught to draw from a young age (my dad is also an artist) before studying at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design (now UCA, Farnham) and then at the University of Lincoln where I graduated with a BA (hons) in Illustration in 2003. I have illustrated commercially in animation, publishing, advertising and editorial and in recent years have increasingly been producing wall art and homewares. I also work professionally as a graphic designer.
I employ a range of traditional media and unconventional techniques to create my images. Ink and paint feature heavily and I utilise all sorts of natural and man-made textures and objects. I manipulate liquids, foodstuffs and other organic matter in various states of life and decay and capture them with photography and digital scanning. I often use extreme close-ups of objects, mess around with scale, and almost always use textures and objects totally out of their original context – get up close and see if you can work out what my images are made of, it’s usually not what it initially seems.
